What a thrill to discover that Across the Dark Sea has been shortlisted for the NSW Premier's Community Relations Commission Award!
Have a look at the whole list, and the judges' comments:http://www.arts.nsw.gov.au/awards/LiteraryAwards/2007%20awards/2007shortlist.htm.
The book is a testament to the courage of the people who, directly or indirectly, shared their stories with me, but it was wonderful to see that some of the other books on the list are written by the people who've lived the same or similar experiences. It's quite humbling, as well as an honour to be there with them.

Writer in Residence at Woodleigh
This week I'm off to be a writer-in-residence at Woodleigh Junior School. I'm looking forward to meeting the kids, hearing their thoughts, and I hope, helping them learn to shape their own stories.
That's the funny thing about being a writer. I spend most of my life closeted in my own little office with the imaginary characters living in my mind and computer (or walking the dog to think about them - or occasionally to avoid thinking about them!) But then there's times like last week, with lots of interviews, and now a week spent in the midst of lots of kids.
It mightn't be a life that would suit everyone... but I feel pretty lucky!

A part for the whale?
The prize for the best question this week was my interview on Brisbane's Radio 4KQ on Thursday: 'Is there a whisper of any big names... for the whale?'
Not sure if I managed to say anything sensible when I stopped laughing.
Tomorrow I'll be talking to Luke Bona at Sydney's 2GB, about 10:40. Wonder what questions will take me by surprise this time?

Radio 3SR
Tomorrow morning I'll be talking to Inga Norgrove at Radio 3SR in Shepparton. I'm feeling quite nostalgic: my kids grew up in the listening region as we farmed outside Shepparton - at Strathmerton, then Numurkah (Waai), and finally Cobram-Yarroweyah, for 19 years. I worked at the Goulburn Valley Base Hospital in Mooroopna and then Shepparton for 10 years - and in fact I'm prety sure that my first ever author radio interview was on this station!

Jessica Joan a Book of the Year???
Yesterday I read in a reliable newspaper source that amongst my 'bevy of awards', Jessica Joan had been a Children's Book Council of Australia Book of the Year in 1999.
Flattering as that is... I have no idea where that information came from - certainly not from me or my publishes. It was not shortlisted and did not win this award either time it was published.
The book, now out of print (I'm hoarding my last few copies!) was first published in 1994. I believe it's still used regularly on ABC's "Playschool" program and is also contracted to be read on Disney Australia – and most importantly, kids still enjoy it!
